Abstract
Background: Th e self conception is not fi rmly made in adolescence. Th e adolescence tends to mimic the styles of famous stars without criticism. It is important to establish a healthy body image in teenage. Th erefore, we performed survey to the high school students to elicit the correlation between body image, self esteem, and disposition of depression by sex and body mass index (BMI).

Methods: On December in 2011, we performed survey to the 95 high school second grade students at one high school in Daegu, with self recording method. We used Mendelson¡¯s Body Esteem Scale (BES) to evaluate the degree of coginition about self body image. We also used Rosenburg¡¯s Self Esteem Scale (SES) to evaluate the degree of self esteem and used Beck¡¯s Depression Inventory (BDI) to evaluate the dispositon of depression in participants.

Results: Th e number of male was 53 (55.8%) and that of female was 42 (44.2%). By BMI, the number of underweight group was 16 (16.8%), and that of normal, overweight, obesity group was 56 (59.0%),12 (12.6%),11 (11.6%). Th e mean of SES was 28.5¡¾4.13 and that of BES was 53.8¡¾6.93. Th e mean of BDI was 10.2¡¾6.17. Th e SES of female was higher than that of male (P=0.01). The diff erence in BDI by sex was signifi cant (P=0.03).Th e diff erence of BES by BMI was signifi cant (P=0.02).

Conclusion: The BES of underweight group was highest. This may reflect the tendency of social preferences in lean body
shape. Also SES and the proportion of non-depression state were higher in female than in male. Th erefore, we should try to help establishing an undeviated self body image in adolescence and consider the difference by sex when approaching the psychological education on depression and self esteem of the adolescents.
