Abstract
Background: Although traditional remedies, also known as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), are popular on Jeju Island, South Korea, no medical research has been done so far on the subject. Th e purpose of this study was to (1) describe the characteristics of CAM users, (2) assess the modalities of CAM and the prevalence of their use, and (3) fi nd the factors associated with CAM use or nonuse.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used. Th e study subjects were adults aged ¡Ã70 (n=83) dwelling in the female diver village in Seogwipo, Jeju island. Data was collected using questionnaires requiring information on sociodemographic features, the types of CAM, the number of times CAM used within last 3 years, personal satisfaction and the reliability of medical service, quality of life, anxiety and depression.

Results: Out of the 83 responders, 71 had tried folk remedies (85%).Th e most commonly used CAM was acupuncture (79.5%). The presence of an experience for diving fi sheries was the only variable signifi cantly related to CAM nonuse. Th ere was no signifi cant diff erence in other variables between CAM users and nonusers. One to 20 years of experience with diving fi shery seemed to be signifi cantly associated with CAM nonuse.

Conclusion: Our study suggests that the main variable that determines use of CAM is the experience between 1 and 20 years in diving fi sheries.
