Abstract
Background: An association between coronary artery disease and ABO blood type have been established. Previous studies have reported an association between blood group non-O and myocardial infarction (MI). Ischemic stroke has similar pathophysiology to MI. Th erefore, we investigated whether ABO blood type is associated with ischemic stroke and/or subtypes of ischemic stroke.

Methods: We reviewed medical records of a general hospital from March 2008 to May 2013. A total of 492 subjects was included in this study, who had taken brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) & magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), serum homocystein, and ABO blood type. We investigated subjects¡¯ risk factors of ischemic stroke such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and smoking, drinking, arterial fi brilation, brain MRI & MRA fi ndings, body mass index, serum homocystein, and ABO blood type. According to Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke criteria, ischemic stroke was classifi cated as large vessel atherosclerosis, small artery occlusion, cardioembolic disease, and cryptogenic stroke.

Results: Th ere was no signifi cant association between ABO blood type (blood group O vs. non-O) and overall ischemic stroke (adjusted odds ratio, 0.99; 95% confi dence interval, 0.618 to 1.598). Furthermore, there was no signifi cant association between any ischemic stroke subtype and ABO blood type.

Conclusion: Th e fi ndings in this study suggest that ABO blood type does not have signifi cant relationship of ischemic stroke or any of the ischemic stroke subtypes.
