Abstract
Background: It is known that metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance are related with increased risk of colon cancer. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is regarded as manifestation of metabolic syndrome in liver. Th is study was planned to determine whether NAFLD has association with colon adenomatous polyps in Korean women.

Methods: We performed a study on the participants who underwent routine colonoscopy at Daegu Catholic University Hospital from January 2009 to February 2012. We examined 1,043 subjects. The exclusion criteria were chronic hepatitis B, chronic hepatitis C, liver cirrhosis, chronic liver disease, liver mass, liver failure, hepatic distoma, cancer, postoperative status, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, alcoholics, and men. As a result, 652 participants joined the investigation finally. Basal anthropometric measurements and blood tests for metabolic function and abdominal ultrasonographs were done. Participants were stratified based on age and alcohol history. They were adjusted for variables previously known to be associated with increased adenomatous polyp risk.

Results: The prevalence of NAFLD was 34.3% in colon adenomatous polyp group and 19.5% in the control group. Age and NAFLD were found to be associated with increasing risk of colon adenoma.

Conclusion: NAFLD was associated with adenomatous polyp of colon. Further well designed studies are needed to confirm the association of NAFLD and adenomatous polyp of colon.
