Background : Dyslipidemia is one of the risk factors for coronary heart disease. In particular, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is the main indicator determining the risk degree and the treatment principles of the disease. In this study, we investigated how therapeutic targets change when direct measurement and calculated values obtained using the Friedewald formula are applied to men with risk factors of age and smoking.
Method : Two groups of men aged 45 or older who had undergone a general health examination at a general hospital in 2013 were selected. In all, the results from 80 non-smokers and 80 smokers were compared. Smoking or non-smoking was decided according to their answers to a national health screening program questionnaire . The LDL cholesterol levels measured were compared with the calculated levels.
Results : Compared to the non-smoker group, the smoker group showed significant difference in the number of the therapeutic targets according to calculated values.
Conclusion : In the case of smokers, when the necessity of treatment of dyslipidemia is to be decided, direct measurement values may be more helpful than estimation values in the prevention of coronary heart disease.
