Abstract
Background : Smoking and alcohol consumption are known to exacerbate liver disorders in hepatitis B virus (HBV) carriers. The purpose of this study was to assess the rates of environmental factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption among HBV carriers.

Methods : Survey data from 1,209 HBV carriers identified in the 2008-2013 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys were analyzed. Survey responses from HBV carriers regarding monthly alcohol consumption, high-risk alcohol consumption, current smoking, age, sex, income, and marital status were compared to those of the entire adult population of the country.

Results : The monthly alcohol consumption rate among male and female HBV carriers were 70% and 35.2%, respectively. The high-risk alcohol consumption rate among them was 26.2%, 5.4%, respectively. According to the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2008-2013), the overall monthly alcohol consumption rate for entire male population was 73.5-77.8% and that for entire female population was 42.9-44.9%. The high-risk alcohol consumption rate was 21.4-23.2% for entire male population, slightly lower than that for the male HBV carriers. The high-risk alcohol consumption rates were similar between female HBV carriers and the entire female population (5.4-6.2%). The smoking rate among male HBV carriers was 45.7%, similar to that of the entire male population (43.7-48.3%).

Conclusion : The results of this study showed a lack of social awareness of hepatitis, smoking, and alcohol consumption, based on the smoking and alcohol consumption patterns among HBV carriers and the adult population. Increasing public education and HBV awareness are therefore urgently required for improving public health.
