The correlations between phase angle of BIA , HRV and fatigue in chronic fatigue patients

Abstract
Background : Chronic fatigue syndrome is a common disorder with symptoms that manifest non-specifically. As a result, accurate evaluation of treatment and its effects is critical. The Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA), and heart rate variability (HRV) measurement have been used for evaluation; however, no further research to investigate correlations between these tools has been conducted. The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of these methods by identifying correlations between levels of fatigue.

Methods : Outpatients with chronic fatigue syndrome who were examined at the Family Medicine Department at the University Hospital in Seoul, Korea, between May 2013 and November 2014 were enrolled in this study. FSS, BIA, and HRV measurement were used to evaluate fatigue severity in 73 adult subjects. Regression analysis was then used to predict the correlation between these 3 methods.

Results : Of the 73 subjects, 35 (47.9%) were men and 38 (52.1%) were women. FSS showed significant negative correlations with phase angle (model 3*: p=0.025), Log Total Power (TP) (model 3*: p=0.018) and Log Low Frequency (LF) (model 3*: p=0.021). Phase angle showed significant positive correlations with mean NN (ms) (p=0.049), Log LF (p=0.042) and Log High Frequency (HF) (p=0.034).

Conclusion : In subjects over 19 years of age, the phase angle, TP, LF, and HF decreased as the level of FSS increased, as shown by both BIA and HRV measurement. The mean NN, LF, and HF increased with the level of phase angle , as shown by HRV measurement.
