Abstract

|
Background : Vitamin D is known to play an important role in the normal development and maintenance of the functions of the human body. This study aimed to identify factors that affect blood vitamin D concentrations, especially fish consumption. Fish is a rather rich source of vitamin D. We also determined the concentrations of heavy metals that enter the bloodstream because of environmental pollution. The concentration of mercury is especially known to be high in fish. Furthermore, we analyzed the association between blood vitamin D and mercury concentrations.
Methods : The data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2010 and 2011 were used. We collected data on blood concentrations of vitamin D and mercury and the frequency of fish consumption for 3,242 people aged more than 19 years.
Results : With the increase in the frequency of fish consumption and the age of the population, an increase in the blood vitamin D and mercury concentrations was observed in men. As the blood vitamin D concentration increased, the mercury concentration also increased in both the men and women.
Conclusion : The frequency of fish consumption showed a positive correlation with blood vitamin D and mercury concentrations. As the blood vitamin D concentration increased, the mercury concentration is also increased.
