Medical Staff’s Attitude towards Adverse Drug Reaction in the Dongguk University Gyeongju Hospital

Abstract

|
Background: The adverse drug reaction (ADR) may directly lead to the death of patients, extension of hospitalization, and increase in medical costs. This study was performed to compare explanation of ADR given to patients upon prescription and those actual ADR occurred, and to identify the factors affecting these.
Methods: In this study, the self-administered questionnaire was used with 172 doctors and nurses who agreed to participate in the study in the Dongguk University Gyeongju Hospital located in Gyeongju, from June 12th to August 30th, 2013. Contents of the questionnaire included demographic factors, explanation for ADR upon prescription and actual occurrence, self-efficacy of explanation and educational experience of ADR.
Results: Subjects gave the explanation for possible ADR upon the prescription or the administration to patients were 156 (90.7%). Subjects told that they should immediately notify a patient of it when ADR occur were 108 (62.8%). Among them, The percentage of doctors was higher than nurse (72.1% vs. 56.1%, P=0.042). Subjects showed the self-efficacy on ADR were 34 (19.8%). The percentage of subjects in the group of doctors was significantly higher than in nurses (35.3% vs. 9.6%, P<0.001). Subjects had the educational experience of ADR were 41 (23.8%). Attitudes about ADR were associated with service part and the period for clinical experience.
Conclusion: It is necessary to give the regular education on knowledge of ADR, to handle upon occurrence of ADR and how to report to medical staff with short period of clinical experience.
