Background: Many factors are known to affect sleep quality. Not only physical illness but also emotional stress can act as burden for those who have uneasy family relationships, thereby lowering the quality of their sleep. The purpose of this study was to investigate how family counseling, provided by family practitioners, could influence sleep quality.
Methods: We studied 33 subjects who enrolled for health care at Osan Hankook Hospital from September 2012 to May 2014. The questionnaire covered Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to evaluate sleep quality, Index of Family Relation (IFR) to evaluate family relationship, and the subjects¡¯ general characteristics. PSQI scores were compared after completing 3 sessions of family counseling which were scheduled every 2 week.
Results: All of the subjects had poor relationship between family members, scoring 30 or above in IFR, and at the same time were poor sleepers, who had PSQI scores of 6 or above. Mean¡¾SD PSQI score before applying solution-focused brief therapy was 9.2¡¾2.4. Mean¡¾SD PSQI score after the therapy was 7.8¡¾2.8, showing significant difference (P=0.024) between the two.
Conclusion: Solution-focused brief therapy which was applied to poor sleepers with poor family relationship was shown to have positive effect on enhancing sleep quality. It could be concluded that comprehensive family oriented counseling provided by a family practitioner was beneficial.
