Influence of Family-Centered Health Care on Stress of Parenting among Mothers with Lowered Family Function

Abstract
Background: Various factors such as characteristics of child, father¡¯s participation to nurturing, marital conflict can influence parenting stress. Parents whose family function deteriorated especially due to marital conflict can experience parenting stress. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of family-centered health care provided by family practitioners on the subjects.

Methods: The survey was conducted with mothers of 28 examinees who enrolled for Health Evaluation Program for Infants and Children at Osan Hankook Hospital from January to December, 2013. The survey included Family APGAR score to evaluate family function, Parenting Stress Index (PSI) to quantify parenting stress. To assess the effect of family counseling, PSI scores were compared before and after the strategic family therapy.

Results: The mean age¡¾SD of the subjects was 32.1¡¾3.8 years. Initial family APGAR score of the subjects was less than 6 with initial PSI score more than 86. The subjects were experiencing parenting stress. The mean¡¾SD PSI scores before and after strategic family therapy were 88.7¡¾2.6 and 82.4¡¾10.7. There was a significant difference (P=0.008) of the PSI score before and after the family counseling.

Conclusion: Strategic family therapy as family-centered health care seemed to be beneficial to those who have dysfunctional family and who experience parenting stress.
