Background: Metabolic syndrome is associated with cardiovascular risk factors. Health behaviors are important in the management of metabolic syndrome, and are closely related to socioeconomic status. Prevalence of metabolic syndrome varies with gender, generation, and decade Therefore, this study was performed to analyze relationships between socioeconomic status, health behaviors, and metabolic syndrome in the employed population over 30 years in 2012.
Methods: In all, 2,998 (men 1,156 and women 1,842) individuals over 30 years in 2012 were included in this study. Multivariate logistic regression was performed using income, education, smoking, alcohol use, exercise, dietary habits, anthropometric data, and blood test results.
Results: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 20.6% (men 20.9% and women 20.5%). Higher socioeconomic status correlated with more beneficial health behaviors in both men and women. Higher socioeconomic status correlated with lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome in women alone.
Conclusion: In the productive population over 30 years, higher socioeconomic status in both men and women correlated with less harmful health behaviors. In women, higher socioeconomic status significantly correlated with lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Therefore, it is important to understand how socioeconomic status relates to health behaviors. This area will require further study of other relevant factors affecting the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in women.
