Background: Previous studies were performed to examine medical professionals¡¯ perception and knowledge of hospice palliative care. However, there is still little research about terminal cancer patients. This study aimed to examine terminal cancer patients¡¯ perception and knowledge of hospice palliative care and their admission motivation.
Methods: The survey was administered to 50 terminal cancer patients admitted to the hospice ward. Data were collected from May 1, 2014, to November 30, 2014, using structured questionnaires.
Results: Terminal cancer patients scored low on knowledge of hospice palliative care. The correct response rate was 47.0%. The item on which they scored the highest was ¡°Palliative care is provided by a team of physicians, nurses, and other health professionals (clerics, social workers, and volunteers).¡± Their perception of items regarding the purpose of hospice palliative care did not show a significant difference.
Conclusion: Considering the results, we suggest developing and delivering a program to improve terminal cancer patients¡¯ perception and knowledge of hospice palliative care.
