Control Study Evaluating the Efficacy of Wrap Therapy for National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel Stage II, III, and IV Pressure Ulcer

Abstract

|
Background: ‘Wrap therapy’ using food wraps is widely used in Japanese clinical sites. This way is not only simple but also cheap cost. Wrap therapy’s superiority was reported in several case reports in Japan but not in Korea. So we designed this controlled trial to evaluate ‘wrap therapy’ is not inferior when compared to conventional treatment.
Methods: Of 32 patients, 18 patients were in Changwon Heeyeon Hospital where using ‘wrap therapy’ as treatment of therapy of pressure ulcer and 14 patients in Busan Second Geriatric Hospital where using conventional treatment. Once a week, wounds were evaluated by Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) score definited by National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP). Kaplan-Meier plots was used for comparison of end point of each group.
Results: Thirty-four patients were analysed. The estimated mean period until healing was 82.27 days (95% confidence interval [CI], 79.85-84.70 days) in wrap therapy group as opposed to 82.00 days (95% CI, 78.02-85.98 days) in conventional treatment group. The estimated mean period until healing in NPUAP stage III is 81.12 days (95% CI, 79.47-84.77 days) in wrap therapy group as opposed to 81.2 days (95% CI, 75.71-86.69 days) in conventional treatment group. There is no statistical significance in difference in PUSH score. Also speed of healing is no statistical significance leading to Mann-Whitney U-test.
Conclusion: Wrap therapy is very simple and inexpensive. There is no difference of effectiveness comparison with conventional therapy. It could be possible to consider wrap therapy as an selective way to treat pressure ulcer.
