Background: Although several studies have investigated the relationship between depression and specific nutrients and foods, few studies have reported on its association with dietary patterns. We examined the association between dietary patterns and depressive symptoms in Korean adults.
Methods: This study analyzed socio-demographic, anthropometric, and dietary data obtained from 9,717 people aged ¡Ã19 years through the 2010-2011 Korean Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Depressive symptoms were assessed by using items in the survey that provided information on whether the subject had depressive symptoms for two weeks or more. Dietary patterns were derived by using principal component analysis of the consumption frequency of 63 food and beverage items. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the odds ratio of having depressive symptoms with adjustment for several confounding variables.
Results: We confirmed three dietary patterns?westernized, Korean, and modified vegetarian. A westernized dietary pattern was associated with more depressive symptoms, while a modified vegetarian dietary pattern was associated with fewer depressive symptoms. Multivariate-adjusted odds ratios of having depressive symptoms for westernized and modified vegetarian dietary pattern score were 1.148 (P-value=0.015) and 0.902 (P-value=0.014), respectively. The Korean dietary pattern had no correlation with depressive symptoms.
Conclusion: Our study suggests that a westernized dietary pattern may be positively associated with depressive symptoms, while a modified vegetarian dietary pattern is negatively associated.
