Background: In adolescents, poor family relations are not only a cause of smoking but also contribute to increased nicotine dependence. The purpose of this study was to investigate how family counselling, provided by family practitioners, could influence nicotine dependence in adolescent smokers.
Methods: We studied 32 subjects enrolled in a smoking cessation clinic at Osan Hankook Hospital from March 2014 to February 2015. They completed a questionnaire that included the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) to evaluate nicotine dependence, Index of Family Relation (IFR) to evaluate family relations, and questions on general characteristics. FTND scores at baseline and after 4 counselling sessions were compared.
Results: All of the adolescent smokers had poor relations with family members, scoring above 30 in IFR. All had FTND scores ranging from 3 to. Before solution-focused brief therapy, the mean¡¾SD FTND was 5.1¡¾1.5, which significantly decreased to 3.8¡¾2.5 (P=0.016).
Conclusion: Solution-focused brief therapy was effective in reducing nicotine dependence in adolescent smokers with poor family relations. Thus, comprehensive family-oriented counselling provided by a family practitioner is beneficial for smoking cessation in adolescents.
