Abstract
Background: Cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is an independent indicator of arterial stiffness. The aim of this study was to ascertain the relationship between CAVI and hair tissue minerals in middle-aged adults.

Methods: A total of 177 subjects were reviewed, and fasting plasma glucose, lipid profiles, hair tissue minerals and CAVI were analyzed.

Results: Results showed that CAVI has a positive correlation with Na concentration in hair (correlation coefficient=0.180, P=0.017), negative correlation with hair Zn and Al concentration (correlation coefficient=-0.150, P=0.046; correlation coefficient=-0.192, P=0.011). In multiple linear regression analysis for CAVI after adjusting for age, CAVI showed significant relationships with hair Na (R2=0.253, P=0.034).

Conclusion: This study demonstrated the correlation between hair tissue Na, Al and CAVI, suggesting the potential use of hair tissue mineral analysis for the screening of cardiovascular disease. Further studies will be needed to investigate the accuracy of hair tissue mineral analysis in predicting cardiovascular diseases.
