Abstract
Background: The prevalence of reflux esophagitis is increasing year after year in Korea. This study was carried out to find any association between reflux esophagitis and waist circumference.

Methods: From July 2012 to June 2013, a total of 823 men who underwent endoscopic procedure at a health promotion center in Busan Medical Center were analyzed retrospectively. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference were considered as the parameter of obesity.

Results: Analyses were carried out on 823 subjects; the mean waist circumference was 85.5¡¾7.2 cm and the mean BMI was 24.5¡¾2.8 kg/m2. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the adjusted odds ratio for subjects in the highest BMI quartile, compared with those in the lowest BMI quartile, was 2.12 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.36?3.29). Furthermore, the crude odds ratio for subjects in the highest waist circumference quartile, compared with those in the lowest waist circumference quartile, was 4.09 (95% CI, 2.70?6.20); the adjusted odds ratio for subjects in the highest waist circumference quartile was 2.98 (95% CI, 1.91?4.66).

Conclusion: Central obesity and BMI are significant independent risk factors for reflux esophagitis.
