Socioeconomic Status and Nutrition Label Use in Korean Adults: The Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2011

Abstract

|
Background : The recent increase in obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and diseases related to blood vessels is known to be related to the changing lifestyle which includes diet. In order to prevent chronic diseases, it is crucial to modify one’s eating habits. Therefore, this study examined the factors influencing the diet of Korean adults, which included socioeconomic status, smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index, exercise, dietary education, and perception of nutrition supplement indication.
Methods : This study analyzed the relationship between age, educational level, income level, alcohol consumption, smoking, regular exercising, dietary education status, and perception of nutrition supplement indication by utilizing data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2010 to 2011.
Results : This study showed a statistically significant, proportionate increase in the utilization of nutrition supplement indication, and educational level and income, in both men and women. Further, the increase in the utilization of nutrition supplement indication and men’s level of education was more dramatic.
Conclusion : This study showed that the utilization of nutrition supplement indication increased with an increase in the educational level and income in both men and women. Since men’s perception of nutrition supplement indication was highly influenced by their educational status, it is evident that men with a low level of education need more education on dietary habits.
