Background : This study aimed to determine the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar spine and body mass index (BMI) in men.
Methods : The subjects were 335 men who participated in a medical check-up program held at Daerim Saint Mary¡¯s Hospital during January-July 2014. BMD (T-score), height, and weight were measured. Men who had a previous history of endocrine disorders or were taking medication, which could influence BMD, were excluded. Factors affecting BMD were analyzed using Pearson correlation.
Results : BMI was positively correlated with BMD in underweight and normal-weight men (r=0.253, P=0.006). However, no significant association was found between BMD and BMI in overweight and obese men. Although not significantly, BMI was negatively correlated with BMD in obese men aged 20-39 years (r=-0.181, P=0.418).
Conclusion : BMI was positively associated with BMD in normal-weight men. However, no significant association was found between BMD and BMI in overweight and obese men.
