Background : There are conflicting results with regard to the association between respiratory function and renal impairment in smokers. The aim of this study was to examine the association between respiratory function and renal function according to smoking status in Korean women.
Methods : From the 2011 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we enrolled 1,545 female participants who were over 40 years of age. Association between respiratory function and renal function according to smoking status was reported through a cross-sectional study design.
Results : In both the smoking and non-smoking group, there was a positive correlation between respiratory function and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Only the lower eGFR group (eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2) showed a lower forced expiratory volume in 1 second and forced vital capacity than the normal eGFR group in smokers, after adjusting for covariance.
Conclusion : Respiratory function was significantly lower in female smokers with lower eGFR. Decreased kidney function accompanies respiratory function reduction in female smokers in some aspects.
