Abstract
Background: Sedentary behavior such as sitting time is considered detrimental to health. However, evidence regarding the association between total sitting time and chronic disease including diabetes in South Korea is limited. This study aimed to determine the relationship between sitting time and prevalence of diabetes in the South Korean adult population.

Methods: This study was performed using data from the sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013. A total of 4,806 participants were included and sitting time per week was checked by paper survey. The association between sitting time and chronic disease including diabetes was analyzed by chi-square test.

Results: Data from a total of 4,806 adults were analyzed by cross-sectional design. Six hundred sixty-two patients had diabetes. Patients with diabetes were more likely to have lower income (187 [28.2%] vs. 535 [12.9%], P<0.0001) and longer mean sitting time (5.9¡¾0.1 hours vs. 5.6¡¾0.2 hours, P<0.0883). In multivariate analysis, sedentary behavior status was not associated with diabetes by weekday sitting hours.

Conclusion: In our study, we observed no association between sedentary behavior and diabetes in Korean adults. The primary limitation of this study was recall bias due to the use of a self-reported survey. Further studies are needed.
