Abstract
To establish item banks and develop computer-adaptive test of patient-reported outcomes (PRO) in chronic diseases, the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) has operated since 2004. To develop item bank, PROMIS teams suggested 6 steps. Among them, they evaluate self-report items using item response theory (IRT) in 5th step. The main reasons to recommend IRT rather than classical test theory were that IRT is more reasonable to measure individual PRO level, and makes computerized adaptive testing system construct easier. This paper was to introduce three assumptions of IRT model such as uni-dimensionality, local independence, and mono-tonicity, as well as differential item functioning. It is necessary for Korean researchers to participate the PROMIS International positively.
