Abstract
among older adults. Gait speed is also reportedly a powerful predictor of adverse outcomes including death. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between gait speed and mortality and to determine the gait speed cut-off point predictive of 3-year mortality in older adults Koreans.

Methods: Data were gathered from the 2008 and 2011 Living Profiles of Older People Surveys and included 11,889 community-dwelling elderly Koreans aged 65 years or older. Participants walked at usual gait speed for 2.5 m. The speed was measured twice to determine the peak value. To determine mortality status of each group, participants were grouped by gait speed intervals of 0.1 m/s. Receiver operating characteristic curves were constructed and many different gait speed cut-offs were tested using sensitivity and specificity analysis to predict 3-year mortality.

Results: A cut-off point for gait speed was obtained to predict 3-year mortality. Based on a 0.4 m/s gait speed, 3-year mortality of the slower group (<0.4 m/s) increased by 34.3% from 2008 to 2011 in comparison with the faster group (¡Ã0.4 m/s). After adjusting for age and sex, slower gait speed (<0.4 m/s) was associated with an increase in mortality risk. However, this association was not significantly observed in a fully adjusted model.

Conclusion: The cut-off point of gait speed that predicts 3-year mortality in community-dwelling elderly Koreans is 0.4 m/s.
