Background: A few studies have revealed the associations between serum vitamin D level and dental caries in the general population. The present study was conducted to elucidate the association between serum vitamin D level and dental caries using the 6th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES).
Methods: This study included Korean adults aged 19 years and older who participated in the KNHANES (VI-1) and underwent dental check-ups for determination of serum vitamin D levels. The associations between the serum vitamin D levels and the number of men with a serum vitamin D level <20 ng/mL who have experienced dental caries was significantly higher than those with a vitamin D level >20 ng/mL.
Results: The serum vitamin D level was significantly lower in women than in men (P<0.001). Women had a higher prevalence of dental caries than men (P<0.001). The number of men with a serum vitamin D level <20 ng/mL who have experienced dental caries was significantly higher than those with a vitamin D level >20 ng/mL of serum vitamin D (¥â=0.224, P=0.041; ¥â=0.676, P=0.046, respectively). The number women with a serum vitamin D level <30 ng/mL who have experienced dental caries was significantly higher than those with a vitamin D level >30 ng/mL.
Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that in Korean adults, serum vitamin D deficiency in men and insufficiency in women are significantly associated with dental caries. Further prospective studies are warranted to determine the causal relationship between serum vitamin D levels and dental caries.
