Association of Serum Uric Acid Level with Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Disease and Coronary Artery Calcium Score

Abstract

|
|
Background: Many studies have investigated but failed to clarify the correlation between serum uric acid level, cardiovascular risk factors, and coronary artery calcification. This study attempted to elucidate this correlation in adult patients that visited a health promotion center.
Methods: Enrolled subjects included adult patients that visited a Samsung Changwon Hospital health promotion center for examinations, between January and December 2013, and whose serum uric acid levels and coronary artery calcium scores (CACS) were measured. Using a CACS of 0 as a standard, the subjects were divided into a non-calcification group with scores of 0 and a calcification group with scores exceeding 0. Differences in the general characteristics of the two groups were analyzed using the t-test and chi-square test. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to assess the correlation between serum uric acid level and cardiovascular risk factors. The odds ratio for the association of serum uric acid level with coronary artery calcification was analyzed by logistic regression analysis.
Results: Serum uric acid showed significant positive correlations with total cholesterol, triglyceride, and waist circumference. It was also significantly positively correlated with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and CACS. The same results were obtained even after adjustment for age and sex, factors that exerted the most effects. Moreover, increased serum uric acid was a significant risk factor for coronary artery calcification (odds ratio, 1.107; 95% confidence interval, 1.012?1.210).
Conclusion: Serum uric acid level is independently and positively associated with cardiovascular risk factors and CACS.
