Abstract

Background: There is increasing evidence supporting the role of vitamin D in albuminuria. Some foreign studies have reported that serum vitamin D levels are associated with albuminuria. We investigated the association between serum vitamin D levels and albuminuria in Korean adults.
Methods: The data for 6,028 subjects aged more than 20 years obtained from the 2013 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was analyzed. We divided serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels into quartiles. Using complex sample logistic regression analysis, we evaluated the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and albuminuria.
Results: Adjusting for age, sex, smoking status, body mass index, estimated glomerular filtration rate, odds ratio for albuminuria by decreasing quartile of vitamin D concentration was increased (P for trend=0.003). Additionally adjusting for diabetes mellitus and blood pressure, this trend was similar to the previous model (P for trend=0.003).
Conclusion: We suggest that low serum vitamin D levels are correlated with an increased prevalence of albuminuria.
