Background: Despite efforts to prevent sports doping, anti-doping rule violations are not showing a noticeable decrease. Several studies have investigated medical practitioners¡¯ knowledge of doping, no such research has been conducted in Korea so far. This study examined whether experience of sport medicine influences physicians¡¯ knowledge of doping.
Methods: The survey assessed physicians¡¯ doping knowledge and attitude towards doping policy. Face-to-face and online surveys were conducted by members of the Korean Academy of Family Medicine, Korean Society of Sports Medicine, and Goyangsi Medical Association.
Results: Overall, 108 physicians responded to the survey. The response rates of the face-to-face and online surveys were 80.3% (57/71) and 2.5% (51/2,005), respectively. Respondents with experience in sports medicine showed greater doping knowledge according to their answers on the four questionnaire items than respondents without such experience. According to a sub-group analysis excluding respondents with experience in sports medicine, we found no differences in doping knowledge between the genders or between specialists in family medicine and other specialists. The majority (60.2%) of respondents felt that doping prevention programs were ineffective, while 64.8% of respondents considered themselves to have insufficient knowledge of doping prevention. However, respondents with experience in sports medicine were more likely to consider themselves to have sufficient doping knowledge compared to respondents without experience.
Conclusion: Physicians with experience in sports medicine tended to have a higher level of knowledge about sports doping than did physicians with no experience; furthermore, they evaluated themselves as well prepared for managing doping cases.
