Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake and hypertension in Korean adults.
Methods: We included 5,853 adults (aged ¡Ã19 years) from the 2012 and 2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. After defining SSB intake as the sum intake of carbonated beverages and fruit juices, the frequency of SSB intake was classified into four categories: 1) none; 2) <3 times/wk; 3) 3?6 times/wk; and 4) ¡Ã7 times/wk. The association between SSB intake and hypertension was analyzed using logistic regression methods.
Results: The prevalence of hypertension in adults with SSB intake ¡Ã7 times/wk was higher than in those with SSB intake <7 times/wk (P<0.001). The multivariate-adjusted odds ratio for hypertension was 10.888 (95% confidence interval, 7.485?15.838) for those with SSB intake of ¡Ã7 times/wk.
Conclusion: These findings suggest that increased SSB intake may be associated with hypertension in Korean adults.
