Abstract

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is one of the most common chronic diseases in Korea. Evidence from previous systematic reviews suggests that AR is associated with higher socioeconomic status (SES). However, few studies have investigated this relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between SES and AR among Korean adults.
Methods: A total of 18,066 Korean adults aged 19 years or older who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2012 were included in our analysis. Their SES was assessed on the basis of household income, education level, residential area, dwelling type, and occupation. The relationship between SES and AR was assessed using multiple logistic regression analysis.
Results: The prevalence of AR was 14.6% among Korean adults. After adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, household income, education level, residential area, dwelling type, and occupation, except for the selected stratification variable, the results indicated that high household income and high education level were associated with AR.
Conclusion: Among Korean adults, AR was associated with high household income and education level. Further evaluations of contributing factors and the mechanism underlying the differences in AR prevalence are needed.
