Background: Body mass index (BMI) is a commonly used measurement of obesity in clinical practice. However, BMI is occasionally of limited use for evaluating the risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) because it is not indicative of abdominal obesity. This study aimed to investigate the association between a 1-year increase in waist circumference (WC) and MS in adults with BMI <25 kg/m2.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 2,113 adults aged ¡Ã40 years with BMI <25 kg/m2, who visited a Eulji University Hospital Health Promotion Center. We included subjects who received a health checkup twice at 1-year intervals. The subjects were divided into three groups based on the 1-year increase in WC.
Results: For male subjects, WC, total-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, and frequency of MS were significantly different among the three groups. For female subjects, age, WC, total- and LDL-cholesterol levels, and frequency of alcohol consumption were significantly different among the three groups. The odds ratio for MS in group 3 (1-year increase in WC >3 cm) was 1.89 (95% confidence interval=1.09-3.27) after adjusting for covariates in male subjects. In addition, a 1-year increase in WC >3 cm was positively associated with high triglyceride levels and abdominal obesity after adjusting for variables.
Conclusion: These results suggest that although individuals may not be obese based on their BMI, interventions for the prevention of MS may be necessary when the 1-year increase in WC is greater than 3 cm in male subjects.
