Background: Influenza is a serious illness that causes significant morbidity and mortality, especially in old-age and high-risk patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate influenza vaccination rates and to develop a vaccination programe for metabolic sydrome in Korea.
Methods: We used data from the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2010-2012. We identified clinical information through physical examination, interview, and a self-assessment questionnaire. We investigated factors influencing influenza vaccination uptake, including socio-demographic characteristics and health behaviors, in patients with metabolic syndrome.
Results: The overall influenza vaccination rate for patients with metabolic syndrome was 46.7%. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that factors influencing influenza vaccination uptake were sex, age, region, education, occupation, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Age and alcohol consumption were significant factors.
Conclusion: The influenza vaccination rate in Korea is low and is influenced by multiple factors. A strategy is required to develop a vaccination programe for metabolic syndrome with consideration of the factors associated with influenza vaccination uptake.
