Background: Few studies have been conducted regarding adults¡¯ preferences for nutrition education and related content-based application in primary care. Thus, we sought to fill this research gap.
Methods: This study was conducted by administering questionnaires to 210 adult workers in Incheon, Korea, from January to February 2016. The questionnaire investigated the need for primary care nutrition education and the preferred education methods and nutrition applications according to the adults¡¯ characteristics.
Results: Only 2.9% of the participants received disease-related nutrition information from healthcare professionals. The average primary care nutrition counseling and education rate was 7.8%, with high school graduates reporting higher rates than the other groups (P<0.01). The older age group responded that nutrition education was very effective in changing eating habits (P<0.05). Most subjects responded that nutrition education conducted by doctors (49.3%) and systematic consultation tools and parallel programs (43.4%) were the most effective methods used in primary care. Subjects with higher application utilization favored the application of the clinic¡¯s nutrition education program (P<0.001), and many subjects reported expectations of personalized disease (42.9%) and disease-related diet information (33.2%).
Conclusion: Nutrition education has been carried out mainly in hospitals, health centers, and screening agencies. Through various ways, including effective clinical content development in nutrition counseling and education, we must address this difficulty to contribute to the prevention of chronic diseases and promote health.
