Association of Serum Parathyroid Hormone and Vitamin D Levels with Cardiovascular Risk Factors

Abstract
|
|
|
Background: Previous studies have shown that hyperparathyroidism and vitamin D deficiency increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. This study evaluated the association of serum parathyroid hormone and vitamin D levels with cardiovascular risk factors.
Methods: This study included 2,848 subjects (≥50 years old) who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011). Subjects were divided into 4 groups based on their serum parathyroid hormone and vitamin D levels and cardiovascular risk factors were compared among the groups (Group 1, parathyroid hormone ≤68 pg/mL and vitamin D ≥10 ng/mL; Group 2, parathyroid hormone >68 pg/mL and vitamin D ≥10 ng/mL; Group 3, parathyroid hormone ≤68 pg/mL and vitamin D <10 ng/mL; Group 4, parathyroid hormone >68 pg/mL and vitamin D <10 ng/mL). The association of serum parathyroid hormone and vitamin D levels with cardiovascular risk factors was evaluated using Pearson’s correlation and multiple regression analyses.
Results: Waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), and systolic blood pressure had significantly increased in Group 2 when compared with Group 1. Fasting blood glucose level in Group 4 was significantly higher than that in the other groups. Serum vitamin D level was negatively associated with BMI and triglyceride levels, whereas serum parathyroid hormone level was positively associated with BMI after adjusting for confounding variables.
Conclusion: Serum vitamin D had an independent effect on BMI and triglyceride levels, whereas parathyroid hormone had an independent effect on BMI in Korean adults aged ≥50 years.
