Abstract
Background: Recently, mental health problems in adolescents have been emerging in Korea, and several studies have reported a relationship between dietary patterns and mental health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between dietary patterns and mental health status.

Methods: This study was based on the 2014 adolescent health behavior online survey. Mental health evaluation criteria included happiness, stress, a recent 12-month period of sadness and despair, and suicidal ideas, plans, and attempts. The dietary pattern criteria included consumption of fruits, carbonated drink, high-caffeinated drinks, sugared beverage, fast food, ramen noodles, crackers, vegetables, and milk in the past 7 days. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the odds ratio of having mental health problems after adjusting for several confounding variables.

Results: Consumption of fruits and vegetables 3 or more times a week, happiness, and stress showed significant correlations. Milk consumption showed a significant correlation with happiness alone. Cracker consumption showed a significant correlation with suicidal ideas, stress, and happiness. Consumption of soda, high-caffeinated drinks, beverages, fast food, and ramen noodles 3 or more times a week; happiness; stress; sadness and despair; and suicidal ideas, plans, or attempts showed significant correlations.

Conclusion: From this study, we found that dietary habits are associated with the mental health of adolescents in Korea.
