Abstract
Background: People often fail to reduce or maintain their weight despite making an effort. However, little is known about why they fail.

Methods: We analyzed the data of 2,114 people aged 19 years or more from the 2014 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who had indicated the desire to lose or maintain weight. We defined failure of weight reduction or maintenance as weight gain after 1 year and examined the factors related to this failure, especially the frequency of drinking or cessation of smoking.

Results: Weight gain after 1 year was reported by 31.2% of the participants. In the multivariate analysis, frequent drinking, a subjective body perception as being fat or very fat, medication for weight loss, and dyslipidemia were associated with a higher risk of weight gain after 1 year. Meanwhile, cessation of smoking, undergoing a medical exam within the past 2 years, and being employed were associated with a lower risk of weight gain after 1 year. Further analysis revealed that the frequency of drinking (more than twice a week) (odds ratio [OR], 1.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08 to 2.01) and cessation of smoking (OR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.43 to 0.83) were associated with weight gain after 1 year.

Conclusion: The frequency of drinking were associated with an increased risk of weight reduction failure, while cessation of smoking was associated with a decreased risk.
