Associations between Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver and Gallbladder Polyps in Health Screen Examinees

Abstract

|
Background: Gallbladder polyp (GBP) is known to be precancerous. Risk factors include obesity, impaired glucose tolerance, and metabolic syndrome, among others. These factors are also important in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the correlation between GBP and NAFLD is not well known, and was investigated in this study.
Methods: This study collected data on sex, age, medical history, and alcohol drinking history, and measured height, weight, systolic blood pressure (SBP), cholesterol, triglyceride, and liver function in 3,337 individuals who visited a hospital in Suwon from January 2013 to December 2014. Abdominal ultrasonography was performed to identify GBP and fatty liver.
Results: Compared to the group with GBP, the group without polyp had more male subjects and a higher rate of obesity. The group with polyp had statistically greater height and weight, higher SBP, higher levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides, and more NAFLD, but had relatively low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P<0.001). Nevertheless, on multivariate analysis, more male subjects than female subjects (odds ratio [OR] 12.016) and more of those with NAFLD than without NAFLD (OR 1.404) tended to have GBP. However, the adjusted model only showed a correlation with sex (OR 11.509). The size of polyp and occurrence of NAFLD did not show significant differences (P=0.226).
Conclusion: The incidence of GBP appears to be correlated with the occurrence of NAFLD, but polyp size is not associated with NAFLD. Studies on the histology of GBP and association with the severity of fatty liver should be performed.
