Background: Various factors such as physical and psychosocial status can influence depression levels among the elderly. This study aimed to investigate depression-related factors among the elderly who have been admitted to nursing homes, and how counseling, provided by visiting family practitioners, could influence depression.
Methods: The subjects of this study were 64 elderly nursing home residents. Questionnaire data were collected from November 2014 to April 2015. The survey questions were based on the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), which is used to measure depression levels. The CSDD scores were obtained at two time points: at the start of the study and after the subjects completed 12 sessions of counseling from visiting physicians; these were scheduled every 2 weeks.
Results: Duration of stay (P=0.011) and visiting frequency (P=0.025) showed significant differences as factors affecting CSDD scores in a multiple regression analysis (R2=0.272). In addition, it was found that mean CSDD scores significantly differed before and after the visiting counseling sessions (before 8.8 points and after 7.95 points, P=0.003).
Conclusion: Various factors, especially duration of nursing home stay and visiting frequency, are associated with depression levels. Furthermore, reminiscence therapy as a visiting counseling technique seemed to be especially beneficial to the elderly nursing home residents with depression.
