Abstract

Background: This study aimed to examine the association between secondhand smoking and renal impairment.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in 1,569 women aged 19?49 years, using data from the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2014). The glomerular filtration rates (GFRs) of women not exposed to smoking and those exposed to secondhand smoking were compared using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation.
Results: After multivariable adjustments, the mean estimated GFRs of women aged 19?29 years in the secondhand smoking group and non-exposed group were 84.3 mL/min/1.73 m2 and 86.10 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Women aged 19?29 years who were exposed to secondhand smoke had decreased renal function compared to women in the nonexposed group. Thus, secondhand smoking can adversely affect renal function in adult women aged less than 30 years.
