Abstract
Background: The prevalence of gallbladder (GB) polyps differs among countries and areas, and the risk factors of the development of GB polyps are controversial according to authors. Although various studies have been reported on GB polyps in Korea, only few studies have been reported in Busan. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, risk factors of the development of GB polyps, and the relationship between metabolic syndrome and GB polyps in the Busan population.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional research was conducted with subjects who visited a single health-screening center in Busan between January 2015 and December 2015. We investigated the sex, age, and history of the subjects and measured their heights, weights, and waist circumferences. Biochemical tests were performed by using their blood samples.

Results: The prevalence of GB polyps was 9.1%. Its prevalence was 10.6% in the men and 6.9% in the women. The mean size of the GB polyps was 5.1 mm, and 54.4% of the subjects in the GB polyp group had a single polyp. Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that only male sex was a risk factor of the development of GB polyps. Those who have metabolic syndrome showed higher risk of the number (odds ratio [OR] 2.577, P<0.05) and the size (OR 2.649, P<0.05) on GB polyps.

Conclusion: GB polyps are not rare in Busan, with a prevalence of 9.1%. Male sex is a risk factor for the development of GB polyps, and metabolic syndrome is associated with the number and size of GB polyps.
