Abstract
Background: Several studies have shown that the risk of cardiovascular disease is increased by metabolic syndrome and hyperuricemia, and is related to obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and impaired glucose tolerance. Thus, it is necessary to determine the relationship between serum uric acid and the risk of cardiovascular disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between serum uric acid and metabolic syndrome.

Methods: A total of 784 subjects who underwent a health examination in our hospital from January 2015 to December 2015 were enrolled in the study. The patients were divided according to the presence or absence of metabolic syndrome, and each group was evaluated for factors associated with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

Results: A correlation between serum uric acid level and risk factors for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease was observed. In particular, age, body mass index, height, weight, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and creatinine levels were all positively correlated. However, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol level was correlated negatively with serum uric acid level.

Conclusion: Serum uric acid is associated with risk factors for metabolic syndrome cardiovascular disease. It is important to examine serum uric acid levels to determine if metabolic syndrome is present.
