Abstract
Background: The South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare has been operating ¡°Comprehensive care ward¡± pilot project, in which nurses take on the responsibility of caregiving, since July 2013. This study was conducted to examine the association between serving in a comprehensive care ward and deterioration of nurses¡¯ health.

Methods: In January 2016, we performed a survey of two groups of nurses: from 4 comprehensive care wards and 6 traditional medical wards of a secondary hospital in Seoul. We evaluated the nurses¡¯ health using self-report questionnaires, namely, the Korean version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-K), the Korean Version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale Abbreviated version (WHOQOL-BREF), and the Beck¡¯s depression Inventory (BDI).

Results: A total of 88 nurses were included in the case-control, cross-sectional study. Using chi-square and independent sample t-tests, we evaluated the nurses¡¯ health. The PSQI-K, BDI, and WHOQOL-BREF did not show significant differences among nurses in the comprehensive care ward group. The means of BDI and PSQI-K global scores were 14.5¡¾7.4 and 7.8¡¾2.8 respectively.

Conclusion: Nurses¡¯ health was not more aggravated in the comprehensive care ward group. However, a multi-center study is needed to uncover the reasons behind the deterioration of nurses¡¯ psychological health.
