Background: It is important to improve diet and exercise habits to maintain an appropriate body weight because obesity is a risk factor for cancer and various chronic and orthopedic diseases. In 2012-2014, there was a weight reduction program for healthcare workers. We had a plan to evaluate the effect of the program, and if the program need to be corrected, suggest improvements.
Methods: In this program, staff members from the medical center, who were either overweight or obese, were recruited. For 12 weeks, the participants were provided with a low-calorie lunch of 500 kcal and an educational program on exercise habits. Biophysical measurements were taken at the beginning and end of the program and these values were compared (n=93). In 2015, the participants were individually contacted for a follow-up survey to evaluate their body weight maintenance (n=66).
Results: There was a significant decrease in body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and percent body fat after the completion of the program. However, there were no significant changes in blood pressure, blood glucose level, and liver and lipid profile. At follow-up survey, there was no significant difference in the mean weight.
Conclusion: This study proves that the weight loss effect and the long-term maintenance of the weight reduction program of the staff members working at the general hospital were comparatively good. Long-term weight maintenance can be enhanced if exercises are actively included in the weight reduction program.
