Background: This study aimed to determine a correlation between body fat percentage (%BF) and fasting blood sugar (FBS) in Korean adult women under the age of 40.
Methods: The study included 334 subjects under the age of 40 who participated in a medical check-up program from January 2015 to October 2015 at a health promotion center. Height, weight, waist circumference, waist to hip ratio, %BF, and FBS were measured. Men and women were divided according to sex and then subdivided based on their %BF. The correlation between %BF and FBS was analyzed. Pearson correlation, simple linear regression, multiple regression, and logistic regression were used for statistical analysis.
Results: The results showed a significant positive correlation between %BF and FBS in all women when grouped together, as well as in the subgroup of obese women (%BF ¡Ã30) (r=0.271, P=0.01; r=0.300, P=0.01). In obese women, simple linear regression analysis showed that a 1% increase in body fat increased FBS by 1.306 (R2=0.090, P=0.001). There were no statistically significant correlations between %BF and FBS in men, obese men (%BF ¡Ã25), non-obese men (%BF <25), or non-obese women (%BF <30).
Conclusion: In obese women, there was a significant correlation between %BF and FBS.
