Abstract
Background: Eating alone is an emerging dietary pattern in the contemporary society owing to an increasing number of single households in Korea. However, little is known about the factors associated with eating alone in the general population. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with eating alone.

Methods: This study included 4,905 adults (¡Ã19 years) who participated in The Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2014. Eating alone was assessed using a questionnaire. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association between eating alone and sociodemographic factors, smoking, alcohol, exercise, nutritional intake, depression, and quality of life.

Results: Participants who ate alone were more likely to be old, live alone, have no spouse, and have lower income and education levels. Men who ate alone smoked more than those who ate with others did. Eating alone was significantly associated with depression and quality of life. In the multivariable logistic regression analysis, depression (odds ratio [OR], 2.18; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06?4.48) and EuroQol five-dimension questionnaire index (OR, 0.21; 95% CI, 0.05?0.95) were independently associated with eating alone in men. In women, eating alone was significantly associated with absence of a spouse (OR, 4.74; 95% CI, 3.52?6.38).

Conclusion: We found that people who were old, did not have spouse, lived in a single household, had lower income, were depressed, and had lower quality of life were more likely to eat alone.
