Abstract
Background: Smoking Cessation Therapy is emphasized in the primary health care sector, and it is a major focus of Family Medicine. This study aimed to investigate nicotine dependence and related factors in participants of a smoking cessation clinic.

Methods: We studied 79 subjects enrolled in a smoking cessation clinic at Osan Hankook Hospital, from March 2016 to October 2016. They completed a questionnaire that included sociodemographic characteristics and the Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence (FTND). Data were analyzed using a univariate analysis and multiple logistic regression, and FTND scores were compared between behavioral intervention and medication only groups.

Results: FTND scores differed significantly with respect to combination of pharmacotherapy and behavioral therapy (P=0.001), smoking duration (P=0.003), and occupation (P=0.037). The multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that combination of pharmacotherapy and behavioral therapy (odds ratio [OR], 5.006; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.599 to 15.670), smoking duration (OR, 0.465; 95% CI, 0.250 to 0.864), and occupation (OR, 4.729; 95% CI, 1.133 to 19.729) were related to FTND scores. Further, there was a significant difference in FTND scores between the behavioral intervention and medication only groups (1.49¡¾1.83 and 2.53¡¾2.49, respectively; P=0.041).

Conclusion: This study revealed that several factors are associated with nicotine dependence. Among these factors, combination of pharmacotherapy and behavioral therapy was the most important and amendable factor. Therefore, it could be concluded that behavioral therapy combined with pharmacotherapy should be implemented actively in smoking cessation clinics.
