Abstract

Background: This study was aimed at determining whether indirect smoking is correlated to bone mineral density (BMD) in men aged ¡Ã60 years.
Methods: This study included men aged ¡Ã60 years who participated in the 2008?2011 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This study included subjects with a urinary cotinine level of ¡´100 ng/mL as indirect smokers, and excluded subjects with a urinary cotinine level of ¡Ã100 ng/mL as possible smokers. Subjects with a history of osteoporosis treatment were also excluded from this study. The Pearson correlation, multiple linear regression, and logistic regression analyses were performed.
Results: The urinary cotinine levels were not correlated with the BMD of the lumbar spine, femoral neck, or total femur. In addition, after adjusting for components that affect BMD, urinary cotinine levels were not associated with the BMD of the lumbar spine, femoral neck, or total femur. As a result, the odds ratio of osteopenia or osteoporosis on urinary cotinine levels was not statistically different.
Conclusion: The urinary cotinine levels of the male subjects aged ¡Ã60 years were not correlated with the BMD of the lumbar spine, femoral neck, or total femur.
