Abstract
Background: Dietary pattern and nutritional management can affect glycemic control in patients with diabetes. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between hemoglobin A1c and the dietary pattern of diabetic patients.

Methods: We analyzed a representative sample of 194 patients with diabetes using data from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2015). The participants were divided into two groups, one containing patients with hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ¡Â7.0%, and the other ¡µ7.0%. The association between glycemic control and daily nutritional parameters regarding frequency of food intake was analyzed by the Mann-Whitney U test.

Results: Among 194 participants, 104 had HbA1c levels 7.0% or less, and 90 had HbA1c levels over 7.0%. The differences in age, weight, body mass index, gender, smoking, comorbid disease, physical activity, and pharmacologic therapy between the two groups were not statistically significant. There was no statistically significant relationship between HbA1c value and the intake of calories, carbohydrates, proteins, fat, fiber, sodium, potassium, several vitamins, and several minerals. There were some significant differences between the two groups regarding food intake, especially multigrain rice, ramen, and jajangmyeon. However, no differences were found regarding white meat, fish, vegetable, fruit, drink, etc.

Conclusion: In this study, no statistically significant relationship was found between glycemic control and daily nutritional parameters, and food intake frequency except for multigrain rice, ramen, jajangmyeon. This study was crucial in confirming that strict dietary control has an effect on diabetes control.
