Abstract
Background: Immunization is an effective means for the prevention of disease; however, the adult immunization rate in Korea remains low. Since it is expected that adult immunization will raise the quality of life and reduce medical expenses for individuals suffering from chronic diseases and the aging population, awareness of adult vaccinations and measures to raise it must be determined.

Methods: From September 28, 2016 to November 30, 2016, we surveyed 349 patients who visited the National Police Hospital Health Promotion Center in Korea. We asked about their awareness about immunization, immunization history (tetanus, influenza, pneumonia, and zoster), self-perceived health status, regular health check-up history, sources of information on immunizations, and the reasons for non-vaccination.

Results: Immunization awareness of all vaccinations, except for zoster, for which no previous studies were available, has increased since 1998. The influenza vaccination rate was significantly higher with lower subjective health status, and the vaccination rate of individuals with pneumococcus was higher than those who did not have regular health check-ups. Sources of information on immunizations included the mass-media, people in close proximity, and doctors. The reasons for non-vaccinations included concerns of side-effects, doubt of its effect, high cost, lack of time, and indifference.

Conclusion: To increase immunization awareness, the influence of the mass-media is still important. Major factors that were found to contribute to awareness are the doctor¡¯s recommendation for high-risk groups, education about side-effects, and high frequency of exposure to information on vaccination at the time of health check-up.
