Association between the Symptoms of Raynaud’s Disease and Phase Angle of Bioelectrical Impedance Analyzer

Abstract

|
Background: The symptoms of Raynaud’s disease are commonly seen in primary care settings. Bioelectrical impedance analysis is used to obtain information about overall body composition and degradation. The symptoms of Raynaud’s disease may be represented as the bioelectrical impedance phase angle, but the evidence for this hypothesis is insufficient. This study demonstrated the clinical utility of the phase angle index in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with Raynaud’s disease, by analyzing the association between Raynaud’s symptoms and changes in the phase angle.
Methods: From April 2015 to March 2016, patients over 20 years old who were examined in the outpatient family medicine clinic in a local university hospital for the complaint of cold hands and feet, and were diagnosed with Raynaud’s disease, were selected for study. The patients were evaluated using digital infrared thermographic imaging and bioelectrical impedance analysis, and the association of the findings with Raynaud’s symptoms was statistically analyzed.
Results: The phase angle values in experimental and control groups were 6.4±0.3 and 6.7±0.9, respectively, showing no significant difference (P=0.344). Moreover, the average body mass index, blood pressure, age, fasting glucose level, and total cholesterol were compared, but the results showed that all items except for age showed no significant difference between the groups.
Conclusion: Among those aged over 20 years, no significant association was confirmed between the symptoms of Raynaud’s disease and the bioelectrical impedance phase angle. Further research is needed to verify these findings, using a larger number of subjects and by controlling related factors.
